Flappers Comedy Club & Restaurant has produced its own podcast, “Flappcast: Behind the Funny” for almost a year-and-a-half. Its earliest incarnation consisted of several well-defined segments featuring interviews with Flappers employees, including co-owners Barbara Holliday and Dave Reinitz, booker Richy Leis, and manager William Nickerson. The Flappcast also featured interviews with headliners such as Kira Soltanovich, Dat Phan, Brad Williams, and Josh Blue.
The current incarnation of the Flappcast is a more relaxed format, in which Barbara Holliday and promotions coordinator Joshua Snyder interview an upcoming Flappers headliner for 30-45 minutes, followed by the Punch-it-Up segment. Punch-it-Up invites comics ranging from amateurs to headliners (Flip Schultz stepped in a few weeks ago, and Chris Cope before that) to perform three minutes for Barb, Josh, and that week’s guest headliner. Afterward, the three offer feedback, tags, and performer notes to Punch-it-Up participants.
“I love the format,” said guest headliner Alice Wetterlund from Chelsea Lately and MTV’s Girl Code, performing at Flappers Claremont on July 18 & 19. “Being recorded, getting feedback right away, and being able to have that feedback on tape. It’s never not going to help.”
Barbara joked that her favorite part of the Flappcast is “talking into the microphone,” because she hadn’t performed in so long before the podcast. Snyder called his role, “derailer of conversation” during interviews with the headliner, then “Paula Abdul” during Punch-it-Up. Barbara is especially proud of Punch-it-Up, because it’s just another way Flappers is dedicated to developing up-and-coming comics.
Aaron Black and Pedro Salinas, two incredibly talented Flappers regulars, joined the Flappcast for this week’s Punch-it Up segment. Aaron has only been doing stand-up for two years, and the Flappcast panel loved his “no homo” bit. Pedro has been doing stand-up for three years, and he used deadpan, false sincerity to riff on how much better rich people are than poor people. Both comedians found Punch-it Up to be a fun and valuable experience.
The Flappcast is open for free to the public each Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in Burbank. Check it out, and, of course, come see the podcast live the week of the festival. The headliner is TBA, but whoever it is is guaranteed to be awesome. Also, stay tuned for features on the FOUR other incredible podcasts recording live in Flappers Mainroom during the week of the festival.
Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you so much to all the comedians who submitted to the comedy festival. It really was a difficult decision but we are very excited about the selections.
